About Me
I am a hard working, patient, and kind caregiver looking to assist seniors with daily living. My background is mostly in working with children, but I am a quick-learner, and am eager to broaden my experience in caregiving.
Last year I spent three months as one of the primary palliative caregivers for my Grandmother, who was diagnosed with stage IV bone cancer. This was the first time that I was exposed to intensive senior-caregiving. During these months, she lost all mobility, was living with chronic pain and fatigue, and required assistance for all day-to-day tasks, including personal hygiene, toilet use, eating, and transfers from her bed to her wheelchair. I understood and administered medications, accompanied her to medical appointments, recorded health information and daily activities, and helped with stretches and range-of-motion exercises. I spent a lot of time reading to her, writing letters to family members for her, and walking her around the neighbourhood. We had wonderful conversations about her past, and we spoke with a closeness that is only possible in these situations. This experience has given me insight into my abilities as a compassionate caregiver, and I want to continue tending to the physical and emotional well-being of seniors who are in need. I know that some may require a companion, some may need personal care only, and some may need both; I am confident in understanding the emotional boundaries that surround each situation.
Although my background is mostly in childcare, my diligence in what I do bridges the gap. I pride myself in having high standards with respect to quality of work, punctuality, organization, and attention to detail. I am comfortable assisting with cooking and meal preparation, pet care, laundry, and light housekeeping in addition to personal care and companionship. I have over 6 years of experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor for both children and adults, so I would be comfortable accompanying them to the pool if desired. I do not have a car, but I do have a valid class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record and would be happy to drive to appointments and go on outings.
Thank you for taking the time to review my profile and I hope to hear from you soon if I sound like the right fit for your situation.
